Kolkata, 10 February: FORMER Trinamool minister Abdul Karim Chowdhury has been removed from the post of chairman of Uttarbanga Unnayan Parshad as well as the president of the governing body of Islampur College in North Dinajpur.
Trinamool leadership took the decision today over yesterday’s violent clash in Islampur College between the faction of students owing allegiance to Chowdhury and those owing allegiance to Trinamool Islampur MLA Kanaialal Agarwal.
The clash took place over the election of general secretary of the college student union with both factions wanting their supporter to occupy the post. The campus violence spilled outside yesterday evening when Chowdhury’s supporters torched shops owned by Trinamool Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahman, who belongs to the same camp as Agarwal.
Peeved at this, Trinamool leadership today afternoon asked Chowdhury to step down as president of the governing body of Islampur College with immediate effect. Simultaneously, he has been asked to put in his papers from the post of chairman of Uttarbanga Unnayan Parshad.
