Midnapore, 11 January: THE husband of a Trinamool councillor of Kharagpur Municipality and his aide have died after being shot at by miscreants in a Trinamool party office today afternoon.
Three more associates of the councillor’s husband have been critically injured in the attack and are battling for life in hospital.
Deceased Shrinu Naidu (26) was the husband of Pooja Naidu, councillor of ward number 18 of Kharagpur Municipality. She had won the 2015 civic polls on BJP ticket but switched over to Trinamool later.
Since then, Shrinu too got associated with the ruling party and used to operate out of the Trinamool office at New Settlement Colony in ward number 18. A railway employee by profession, Shrinu was involved in railway scrap business and used to maintain a gang to scare his rivals.
Early this afternoon, along with aides Dharma Rao, M Govindan, Srisenu, and B Govindan, Shrinu was seated in the Trinamool office when a gang of unidentified miscreants attacked then with pistols and crude bombs.
Hearing gunshots, residents rushed in to the office only to find the five lying in a poll of blood in front and inside the office. They had suffered bullet injuries in the head and stomach, and the miscreants had fled the spot by then.
Shrinu was rushed to the Kharagpur Railway Hospital; the other four were taken to the Kharagpur Sub-divisional Hospital. Dharma succumbed to the injuries soon after being admitted to the hospital; Shrinu was referred to Kolkata but he too died on the way.
Preliminary reports suggest that the killings were the result of rivalry between scrap mafia groups of which the Trinamool councillor’s husband was a party.
