Siliguri, 12 August: UNION minister Rajnath Singh has given time to Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) for a discussion to resolve the impasse in Darjeeling Hills.
This comes on a day when GJM’s indefinite shutdown of the Hills completed 59th day and some Gorkha youths tried to wave black flags to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Delhi on the last day of her two-day tour of the national Capital.
“Today the GJM received intimation from the Union home minister requesting us to join for talks tomorrow at 4.30 pm in New Delhi,” party chief Bimal Gurung informed through a Press release tonight.
The gesture is far from the Centre initiating a dialogue on GJM’s demand for Gorkhaland, but nevertheless could provide the party a face saver. Political observers believe that the party would call off the shutdown after meeting the home minister tomorrow.
In the release, Gurung has added that since the agitation in the Hills has “transitioned into a people’s movement,” he referred the Union home minister’s intimation for the meeting to other parties in the Hills.
“I am hopeful that the hill parties leading the movement will attend this meeting and help find a possible road map to Gorkhaland statehood,” it reads.
Leaders of various political parties from Darjeeling, including GJM, are camping in Delhi since 1 August lobbying for a meeting with the home minister. Sources said that BJP Darjeeling MP and Union minister SS Ahluwalia has facilitated the appointment.
