Bolpur, 25 August: A VEHEMENT opposition by the university teachers and staff on Tuesday compelled Visva-Bharati authorities to call off the annual general meeting of its Karmimandali, a body that conducts all festivals of the varsity including that of Poushmela and Basanta Utsab.
The Karmimandali AGM was scheduled to take place at 5 pm on Tuesday at the varsity’s conference hall.
But the Joint Action Committee (JAC), a unified platform of Visva-Bharati teachers, staff and officers, alleged that the meeting had been convened without the mandatory seven day notice and also bypassing the registrar who is supposed to convene the AGM.
A delegation of the JAC called on vice-chancellor Sushanta Duttagupta at his office around 11.30 this morning on the issue. They demanded that the Karmimandali AGM, where its new executive body is to be elected, should be called off and the meeting should be convened afresh by the registrar in observance of the norms.
Following this, towards afternoon Visva-Bharati registrar D Gunasekharan issued a notice stating that the AGM has been cancelled.
“The VC has asked the present executives of the Karmimandali to schedule a new date for the AGM in consultation with the JAC,” said Ananda Mitra, one of its members.
