Silchar, 28 February: VODAFONE has today formally launched 4G service in Silchar, the second largest urban hub of Assam after Guwahati.
With this, Silchar has become the sixth town in Assam to have 4G service. Prior to this, Vodafone launched 4G service in Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Tezpur.
The 4G service in Silchar has been launched today afternoon in presence of the deputy commissioner of Cachar, S Viswanathan, superintendent of police, Rakesh Roshan, and Nidhi Lauria, Vodafone’s business head for Assam and north-east circle.
Speaking at the launch, Lauria said that the launch of 4G service would enable Vodafone users in Silchar to enjoy high-speed Internet using which they would be able to even watch television live on mobile phones.
“People with 4G handsets can simply walk into any Vodafone store or retail partners to procure a 4G SIM absolutely free of cost. Also, one can call up our customer care for free home delivery of 4G SIM to their homes,” she said.
Lauria said that they welcomed the present competition from other mobile telecom players as this pushes for innovations and facilitates technical upgrade benefiting both the industry and the users as a whole. “But as a company, we don’t believe that free service or tariff cut can be a sustainable model. Hence, our focus is on offering seamless connectivity to our customers wherever they go.”
She added that in the past six months, Vodafone has seen about 10 per cent growth in its 4G business in the north-east region. “As regards Silchar, Vodafone has a subscriber base of around 1.20 lakh and of them, about 40 per cent uses data service.”
Beginning 2007 and until today, the company has invested Rs 2,200 crore in Assam and the north-east circle to expand, modernise, and build a technology and energy efficient network.
