Asansol: A homeless man, who used to survive on begging, has died of the cold at Kanksa in Durgapur at the very start of winter.
The deceased and his aged wife used to live on the pavement near the defunct hospital at Kanksa. Although nobody provided them a shelter, residents of the area used to provide them food on occasions. At other times, the couple lived on whatever they could get by begging.
As the winter chill set in the area yesterday with the minimum temperature dropping to 10.8 degree Celsius, the aged homeless man could not stand it. He passed away late last night with his wife seated next to him.
Residents of the area came to know about the death today morning and cremated the man with help from Kanksa police station.
East and West Burdwan, Bankura, and Purulia are prone to both chilling winter and scorching heat due to the proximity to the dry-land of Jharkhand.
