Diamond Harbour, 11 January: A youth has been lynched by mob at a village in South 24-Parganas on the suspicion that he was a cattle rustler.
The mob has also torched a freight carrier (pickup van) that was allegedly being used to ferry stolen cattle.
The incident took place in the wee hours today at Dharmatala village under Canning police station. Five youths were passing through the village in a freight carrier, when the villagers apprehended them and began to thrash them accusing that they were cattle rustlers.
This is because there have been a number of cattle thefts at Dharmatala and its adjacent villages in the recent past. During the public thrashing, four of the five youths managed to flee, but the fifth one could not escape and was lynched on the spot. The angry mob also torched the freight carrier.
Getting to know of the incident, police reached the village early today morning and recovered the dead body of the lynched youth whose identity is not known yet. Police also towed away the partially burned freight carrier.
In view of tension prevailing in the village, a temporary police picket has been posted there. Cops are trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased youth and also the owner of the freight carrier.
